Whether you are bringing a new pet home for the first time, or just want to include your pooch in the holiday festivities dog gift baskets are a great way to make your canine feel like part of the family. All you need is a few doggy items, and you're set! You can make them for yourself, or give them to your dog lover friends.

Dog gift baskets are very simple to assemble; the following are some suggested items to be included:

- Basket (with or without handle, can be found at craft or discount stores) OR a dog bed (recommended for small breed dogs)

- Fleece throw (buy an inexpensive one from a discount store)

- Toys (ideas include chew toys, toys that make noise, tennis balls, a stuffed animal or "buddy")

- Treats

- Leash

- Brush

- Shampoo

- 2 bowls

- A ribbon or bow

Keep in mind, with puppies chew toys are highly recommended to prevent them from damaging anything, while tug of war toys are not because they can lead to aggressive behavior.

To create your dog gift basket, use the fleece throw to line the basket or dog bed. If you are including food and water dishes tip them upright and nestle them in the back. Arrange the rest of the items from tallest to shortest, back to front. I recommend removing items such as leash, brush and toys from their packaging beforehand - this makes the basket more attractive and everything is ready to use!
